[Cognate Applications, 18,929/12 and 22,774112.] Tentering.-In a tentering-device applicable to steam can drying-machines, the fabric-holding pins or clips are secured to endless flexible bands mounted on blocks which slide in grooves in endless rails. Fig. 1 shows the general lay-out. The endless rails 1 run round the steam-heated drying- cylinders 2 and up to the grooved pulleys 3, so that the tentering-chains 11 are carried around the cylinders 2 by the rails, and around the pulleys by the grooves therein, and then back underneath the machine as shown. Pulleys 7, 8 are provided at the ends, the latter being adjustable to take up stretch due to heating. The fabric may be given a flexible finish by imparting an up-and-down motion to it as it passes through. This is done by making the pulleys 3 on one side of the machine adjustable in height. Alternate pulleys are arranged higher and the others lower than the corresponding fixed pulleys on the other side of the machine. Suitable mechanism is provided for adjusting the positions as required. Figs. 16 and 17 show one of the sliding blocks 6 to which the flexible bands 11 carrying the pins 12 are secured. The bent-over ends 14 of the bands 11 are secured by bolts 16, and the flanges on the bands are slotted to give resilience. In the modification shown in Fig. 23, a spring clip member 21 is used instead of the pins. The arrangement of pins may be otherwise modified. The fabric may be forced upon the pins by a suitable brush, and taken off by a cam edge.
