Abstract

8317. Dover, H. W. April 6. [Cognate Application, 19,594/12.] Hand-wheels, particularly the steering-wheels of motor-vehicles, are constructed so that the spokes interlock with one another and with the rim. Fig. 1 shows a sectional plan, and Fig. 2 a cross-section of part of a hand steering-wheel, in which the stamped sheet-metal spokes c fit the hub and have interlocking portions. The bosses f of the spokes receive bolts or rivets g, which connect the spokes, hub, and cover-plate j together. The outer ends of the spokes are T-headed and interlock with the rim, which is preferably formed of channel-irons o, p of different thickness and recessed at q to receive a coating of celluloid, xylonite, &c. Spokes of the construction indicated are also applied to rims constructed as described in Specification 2623/06 and protected as described in Specification 18,148/06. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a spring plate v, shown to a larger scale in Fig. 5, riveted to the rim at w is apertured at y, y to receive the studs s on the end of each spoke c. The plate v is recessed to receive the stud s<1> and has lugs x through which passes a rivet z which secures them to the spoke c.
