Regulating.-In a centrifugal compressor having a constant-volume governor located in the inlet pipe, disturbances due to a backflow of air are obviated by providing an unbalanced valve in the inlet pipe between the governor and the compressor. This valve 10 is mounted on a spindle 9 so that it has a tendency to close but is opened by an inflow of air through the pipe 3 to the compressor 1, the opening movement being assisted by the provision of an angle-iron 11 forming a pocket on the front face of the valve. The constant-volume governor comprises a float 35 and the mechanism described in Specification 22,447/08. To retard the closing movements of the valve 10, a dash-pot device 17 is provided controlling an arm 19 secured to the valve spindle. The valve 10 may serve as a manuallyoperated throttle valve by connecting by means of a bolt 34 an arm 33 on its spindle with an arm 32 controlled by a lever 21. The arm 32 may alternately serve as a stop to limit the opening of the valve without interfering with the automatic closing of the valve.
