Producers.-In a gas-producer the fuel space is divided into two chambers g, h by an arch f, and the gases and distillates from the upper chamber g pass by openings l to a space m, where they are burnt with air supplied from inlets m, p before reaching the lower chamber h. The gas outlet t is at the bottom of the producer. The fuel is closely packed at a point i adjacent to the arch f and air-inlet r, so that little air or gases pass downwards at this point. Steam may also be admitted to the combustion space m with the air from a chamber o in the arch f. A valve or damper may be fitted still further to constrict the area at the point i opposite the arch, and the fuel is partly coked before reaching the chamber h. In a modification, the chamber o at the end of the arch f may be divided into two portions, one of which supplies air or air and steam to the fuel lying above the arch, and the chambers g, h may be of cylindrical form and arranged axially one above the other.
