Winding webs.-Cores for winding paper rolls on, of the kind formed of several layers of tough paper cemented together to form a strong tube, are fitted at their ends with protecting-bushings made of one piece of sheet metal which can be applied to the cores without any considerable reduction in thickness of the material on the ends of the core. As shown, the bushing is formed of sheet metal, preferably steel, drawn and rolled into a shell shaped to conform to the tubular body of the core, and having the same exterior and interior dimensions as the core. The walls c, d of the bushing are connected by an annular member which is bevelled at e towards the wall c and rounded towards the wall d. The thickness of the walls c, d is about that of two layers of paper of the core, so that by scoring the core internally and externally along the lines i, and removing two layers of paper, and bevelling the inner edge and rounding the outer edge of the core, it is ready to receive the bushing. A notch f, for receiving a projection on the winding-shaft, is made in the bushing before applying it, and a similar notch f<1> is made in the core after the bushing is applied. Rivets are driven through holes g to securo the bushing in place on the core.
