Abstract
5043. Chantry, R. Feb. 29. Line floats.-A float is described by which a line can be conveyed to a distance from the operator and allowed to fall to the sea or river bottom at will. The float has a central cylindrical hole c through which the line passes. The line is looped round the bolt d which terminates at one end in an eye b and passes at the other end over a spring e. A string, held by the operator, and on which a number of corks are mounted, is attached to the eye b. In use, the float is allowed to drift under the action of wind, tide, &c. until it reaches a convenient position, whereupon the string is pulled, thus drawing the bolt d through the loop in the line and allowing this to fall to the bottom. A signal a is attached to a wire frame having at its base an eye through which the bolt d passes, so that the signal falls when the line is released. Fins f are provided to increase the stability of the float and to offer a suitable resistance when the bolt d is pulled.
