Abstract
25,013. Havenith, J. Oct. 30. Sounding-apparatus. - A weight K is attached to a line 0 wound round a winch N at the fore-end of the ship and a grooved pulley A, the line having a trailing float Z, which creates a constant tension on the line, so that, when the winch is allowed to rotate freely and the weight to descend, the pulley A rotates in a clockwise direction, giving an indication on the scale W until the weight reaches the position K' on the sea bottom vertically, below the pulley. The revolutions of the pulley give a measure of the depth. A stop on the line, arranged to contact with a spring R, prevents shock at the moment when the weight strikes the bottom. An eyelet at X guides the line as it is unwinding.
