4009. Lawrie, W. Feb. 17. Sterilizing and treating soil with steam. - Apparatus for sterilizing soil &c., applicable also as a propagating-pit or hot-bed, comprises a soil-receptacle, a steam-chamber beneath the receptacle, a boiler heated by a lamp, and a hot-air chainber within the steam-chamber. The hot-air chamber C<1> and steam-chamber C are arranged beneath a perforated false bottom B in the soil-receptacle A. The fumes from the lamp H pass into the chamber C<1> through the passages D, E, and then escape into the atmosphere. Steam enters the chamber C from the boiler F through a pipe G, is superheated by the hot-air chamber C<1>, and then passes through the false bottom B into the soil &c. The lamp H is suspended from the boiler by rods K, the passage D through the boiler serving as a chimney. Water is supplied to the boiler from a cistern P, the inlet pipe p being adapted to be closed by a sliding rod N actuated by a float M. A water-gauge Q is provided.
