3383. Cairns, A. P. Feb. 10. Expanding pulleys, for motor-vehicles, are operated by fluid under pressure acting by way of expansible chambers f, which are isolated by thrust bearings s, s<1> from the revoluble pulley parts so as not to turn therewith. The chamber f exerts thrust upon annular plates p, p<1>. This thrust is transmitted through the bearings s, s<1> to the movable flange a of the pulley on the one hand, and to an abutment m fast to the fixed pulley flange c on the other hand. To operate the pulley, fluid is pumped into or allowed to escape from the chamber f. In a modification, one thrust bearing only is used, and the chamber is supported on the other side by a fixed frame.
