Holding open and closed.-Means for retaining an umbrella in its open and closed positions comprises two spring-controlled abutment rings B, B', Fig. 2, which are mounted to slide upon the stick A and are connected through slots therein with members b<1> each carrying a button D, D' on a blade spring d. A spring b<2> connecting the members b<1> retains each abutment ring at one end of its slot. In opening the umbrella, the sliding runner C, Figs. 2 and 4, moves the abutment ring B taking with it the button D, which passes out through a hole in the stick and engages a recess c' in the runner C. To close the umbrella, the button D is depressed and the runner moved until it contacts with the second abutment ring B', when, by a similar action, the button D' . is projected through a hole in the stick and enters a hole c in the runner. The buttons may be fixed to spring tongues punched from the members b<1>, and these members may be connected to the stick by springs instead of to one another by the spring b<2>.
