Abstract
2532. Fell, J. C., [Union Typewriter Co.]. Jan. 31. Carriage - retarding devices comprise a rack on the carriage gearing with a pinion 76 on a vertical shaft 77 having a radial arm or blade 81. The shaft and the blade are surrounded by, and can turn relatively to, a drum 80 containing material such as shot. The drum is normally free to turn with the shaft, but can be held stationary by a stop which is projected into the path of a pin 86 on the drum by the actuation of any of the tabulating-keys.
