Abstract
2470. K÷hler, W. C. Jan. 30. Docks; subaqueous structures. - Graving docks, locks, and similar structures are formed of a water-tight hull 8 which is constructed in a dry site, floated, and then towed to the excavated site of the dock, where it is ballasted with concrete and completed, forming a ferroconcrete structure. The side walls are formed of inner and outer walls, the inner wall being strengthened by longitudinal ribs 13, and the outer wall sheathed with plating. The bottom is provided with longitudinal ribs 1, the whole of the space between which is filled with concrete. Before floating, the end of the dock is provided with a wall or caisson which is temporarily braced to the sill. When completed, the sill and side walls may be lined with granite. The site of the dock may be first excavated a few feet below water-level, the hull 8 built therein and then floated away, the site fully excavated, and the hull towed back to the original site, filled in with concrete until it rests on the bottom of the excavation, and the side spaces 4 filled in.
