Abstract
2468. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. Jan. 30. Residual gases. - Lamps with filaments of tungsten or molybdenum contain volatile compounds of these metals such as are decomposed at the incandescent filaments but are reformed from their elements at the temperature inside the bulb to prevent blackening. The pressure of the gases is less than 0À01 mm. and usually less than 0À001 mm. of mercury, and is such that the deposition on the filaments balances the scattering from them. Halogen compounds may be used, such as tungsten hexachloride, oxytetrachloride, or dioxydichloride; or similar compounds of other halogens. They may be introduced before exhaustion, in excess; or after exhaustion, by sublimation; or they may be produced inside the lamps by heating a little tungsten in chlorine. Water-vapour is removed during exhaustion; or afterwards by introducing the halogen compounds preliminarily and condensing-out with liquid-air. The leading-in wires may be of tungsten or platinum. Specification 15,621/10 is referred to.
