Abstract

1593. Tilston, E. Jan. 19. Reservoir pens. - A reservoir pen is provided for filling purposes with a detachable bulb having a nipple which is adapted to be inserted into an opening in the pen, and also with a valve which can be opened during the inflow of the ink and closed prior to the removal of the bulb in order to prevent overflow of ink during the removal of the bulb. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the barrel a of the pen is closed at the rear end by a screw-plug d having a central opening e, which is normally closed by a plug and is adapted to receive the nipple g, Fig. 2, of the filling-bulb f. The nipple is tapered at h to fit the opening e. and may have a screw-threaded end i. A stem k carried by the plug d has a valve m formed at one end, and a channel n at the other end communicating between the reservoir and the opening c. In a modification, the opening for the nipple is formed in the side of the pen, and is opened or closed as required by operation of the screw plug. In a further modification, the plug that carries the central opening e is adapted to form a valve so as to open or close a small opening leading into the reservoir at the rear end of the pen. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, a valve t on a stem t' is opened by the insertion of the nipple g and is automatically closed by a spring v on removal of the nipple.
