Abstract
1554. Siemens Bros. & Co., [Siemens & Halske Akt.-Ges.]. Jan. 19. Electricity, discharging from paper, fabrics, and the like. - The electricity generated in spinning, weaving, paper manufacture, or the like is discharged by ionizing the air between the charged material and an earthed electrode by means of ultra-violet rays, such as those produced by an arc between iron electrodes or the mercury arc in a quartz lamp. The textile material &c. may pass between an earth-plate and a compartment .which encloses the lamp and has windows for the emergence of the rays, or, as shown in Fig. 2, mercury tubes Q may be placed between the textile material F and the earth-plate E. The textile material may alternatively pass between two rows of tubes within an earthed enclosure which surrounds the tubes, or through earthed wire cages E, Fig. 4, outside which the ionizing-rays are produced at Q. The air may be ionized away from the machine and be blown along earthed tubes which surround the treated material.
