1420. Lambert, H. L. Jan. 18. Sand, distributing on wheel tracks.-In apparatus for sanding rails employing a mixture of sand and water, the pressure of the water is caused to open the valve. Steam or other compressed fluid may however be substituted for water. According to one arrangement, Fig. 1, the hinged flap g controlling the outlet of sand from the box b and normally retained in closed position by a counterweight g<1> is opened by a jet of water impinging thereon from a passage h leading from the main water-supply passage d. Nozzles k, k<1> embedded in the sand are connected by pipe i with the passage d. A small jet of water emitted from a further passage l serves to wash the valve and apparatus during sanding and, by reason of the emptying of the pipe i, after shutting off the water. Bars f form a grid at the mouth of the sand-passage e. In a modification, Fig. 3, the valve is opened by the pressure of the water acting on a spring-pressed piston n. Fig. 4 shows a valve suitable for use with such a sanding-device and comprising a valve q on the rod r which is prevented from rotation by feathers r' and is operated by a handle s<1> working on the screw-threaded end s of the rod. Packing t protects the screwthreads from water. The arrangement of the valve q is such as to permit the packing t to be remade when the cock is under pressure without fear of the rod r being forced out. A connexion u for supply to the sander and drain-pipe v are provided.
