Abstract

1250. Siemens - Schuckertwerke. Jan. 16, 1911, [Convention date]. Alternating-current commutator machines.- A single - phase repulsion motor for driving cranes &c. is braked by converting the motor into a shunt-excited direct current machine. The motor is switched off from the mains, the short-circuit is broken at the brushes, and a load resistance is switched in. According to one arrangement, Fig. 2, the brushes b', b<2> are shunted both by a resistance w and by a shortcircuiting switch k controlled, for example, by a relay r. When the load is to be lifted, the switch k is closed, and pressure is applied to the stator windings c, e through a regulating transformer t. To lower the load, the leads from the transformer t to the mains and the switch k are opened and the machine operates as a short-circuited direct-current generator, the winding c serving as a compensating winding. In a modification, the braking switch is provided with extra contacts for enabling the braking and rotor-compensating effects to be varied, and the winding c, during braking, is connected in series with the resistance w.
