Abstract

Distortion of field, preventing; motors, controlling. -A single-phase compensated series motor having a separate excitation winding E<1>, E<2>, Fig. 1, for each direction of rotation, such as is described in Specification No. 22,653, A.D. 1904, is operated on direct-current circuits by connecting the two windings E<1>, E<2> in series so as to produce a stronger field, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. In order satisfactorily to compensate the motor when running on direct-current circuits, the ratio between the ampere-turns in the compensating- winding C and the armature A is made greater than when the motor is working with alternating currents ; for example, the armature mav be shunted by a resistance when working on direct current, or the compensating-winding may be designed as a series winding for direct-current working and may be short-circuited, or supplied by a series transformer, when used on alternating current. A modification is shown in Fig. 6, in which only a part of the compensating-winding C is short-circuited in alternating-current working, and a suitable voltage may then be applied at the leads l, m to produce a commutating-field.
