Abstract
1071. Beach, W. J. H. Jan. 13. Ordnance breech mechanism. - Relates to friction firing-arrangements, and consists in the use of a pyrophoric alloy in conjunction with a rotatable friction device mounted axiallv in the obturator stem. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a friction wheel a is rotated by a flexible shaft e driven by any suitable means, and rubs against three sticks or blocks h of the pyrophoric alloy carried by the obturator c. In a modification, the friction wheel rotates continuously, and is moved longitudinally to bring a roughened portion of its periphery into contact with the sticks h of the alloy. In a further modification, the wheel a is made of pyrophoric alloy, and the sticks h are replaced by steel pins or other friction members. It is stated that the guns of a battery may be fired selectively by wireless radiations.
