Abstract

191277. Edgar, H. Jan. 1. Percussive drills. - Relates to a rock drill of the type in which a double-headed piston is reciprocated in a cylinder having a fixed partition, the motive fluid being conveyed to and exhausted from the chambers on both sides of the partition between the partition and the piston heads. The drill bit 26 is secured to the piston by means of bevelled keys 29, 30, which are pressed outwards by springs 31, 32, and its end receives a conical plug 35 on one end of a pipe 24, which is carried by the piston and has a piston head 25 moving in the twist bar 15. To take away the bit 26, the cylinder cover 8 is removed. In operation, as the piston reciprocates, the pipe 24 draws water through a passage 18 past a ball 20 and then forces the water out through the bit 26. The drill is fed forwards by a screw 37 engaging a nut 39 in the cradle 40.
