Abstract

13,575. Tippett, E. June 4. Percussive drills.-The debris produced by hammer drills is removed by passing it through the drill and machine. In the form shown, the debris passes through a pipe 18 which passes through the machine to a point near the cutting-edge of the bit 9, and has at its rear end an ejector 26, a vacuum chamber, or other suction means. In a modification, the pipe is provided with a valve, and is reciprocated by hand or automatically from the piston or by the recoil of the cylinder or the like so as to pump out the sludge, or the valve may be omitted and the pipe closed by the thumb of the operator when required. Water may be introduced into the hole by hand or by a pipe, or through the drill; or a grooved bit may be used, the pipe 18 passing down one groove, and a water pipe down the same or another groove. A larger pipe 21 may surround the pipe 18, the hammer piston 13 sliding thereon. A rifle bar 14 engages a ratchet-wheel 7 to rotate the piston intermittently, the motion being conveyed through a bush 8 to the bit 9.
