Be it known that we, HENRY lTlELLMAK tuaens ol. the United States, and residents of: Johannesburg, Transvaal, have invented certain new i and useful Improvements in l'Vater-Supplying Attachments for Rock-lhilling ltlechines, of which the following is a wecification.
This invention relates to rock-drilling niachines or engines and to attachments for supplying Water through the drill-stecl to the cutting extremity thcreoi with the object of preventing the impregnstionof the atmosphere en ti dust or minute particles ol rock'produced when the machine is in operation. The dissemination of this dust, as is Well known, deleteriously aliects the health of r0ck-drill operatms. Another 1'. 'iportant feature of the introduction or supplying of Water to the cutting-point oi tl 1e drill is that it increases the ellioiency oi the machine by washing away the detritus, so that the hit contacts directly with the solid rock and is it also prcserves the cutting end of the drill and so oh viatcs the necessity for as .l'rocuoi t renewal of the drills or bits as When Wat is not used. The attachment which is positioned on the shank or rear end oi the drilhstoel is readily detachable therefrom in the operation of renewing the drills, and such arrangement has the further advent ge that it obviates the necessity for the passing of the water through any part of the machine or engine proper, so that drills of bits may he used in the same machine without the water -supplying al.-

In the drawing, 1 designates a hollow cylindrical protecting-casing, and 2 the powercylinder, which is slidahly and rotatably mounted in said casing.

The sleeve 3 is split and formed with the lugs 5, between which is placed a bolt 6, which serves for drawing the two lugs 5 together to tighten the sleeve 3 round the casing l. I
The casing 1 is constructed with an inletport 7 at or in proximity to the rear end, which serves for connecting an ordinary throttle-valve through which the compressed air or other actuating fluid is admitted to the rear end of the casing l. The drill-steel 16 is at its forward extremity constructed or fashioned into any ordinary and suitable form of drill or hit, as a chisel-bit or starbit, and at its rear end or shank is made'of square or polygonal section to correspond to the bore 15 of the hush 14, in which it is loosely positioned. This constructimi insures a synchronous rotation ot the hit 16 with the power-cylinder 2, while allowing the hit 16 to move longitudinally of the powercylinder 2 within certain limits. The inner end 01'' the shank 17 abuts the forward end of the impactpiece 10 in the working of the ma chine, so that the repeated impacts of the percussive reciprocating member 1i are immediately transmitted from the impact-piece it) to the shank of tho drill-steel 16.
