Abstract
29,382. Waud, W. H. Dec. 30. Chain gearing; conveying rotary motion.- Chain gearing is used to connect a rotary pedalactuated shaft c to a shaft h so as to utilize the mechanical advantage of a pair of differential pulleys or chain-wheels x. Drums d, e, Fig. 1, mounted loosely on the shaft c are connected by bevel-gearing 9, 10, 9<1> so that they must always turn in opposite directions. A band y' secured to the upper side of the drum d passes across between guide-pulleys 3, 2 round a guide-pulley 1, where it joins on to a chain y, over a pulley x and down to a pulley q, Fig. 3, then again over the pulley x and ending on the underside of the drum e. A companion band and chain begins above the drum e and ends below the drum d. Rods o, p communicate the pulls upon the pulleys q to cranks j, k upon the shaft h. The drums d, e are caused to turn alternately with the shaft c so that the chains y and cranks j, k come alternately into action. To effect this, spring plungers 6 project from the faces of the drums d, e into the paths of pedal-cranks b, which are fast on the shaft c. At the proper time, an incline on the side of each plunger 6 engages a fixed part f so that the plunger is pressed inwards and the crank is allowed to slip past. Additional cranks m, Fig. 3, on the shaft h may be connected by rods 12, 16 to eccentrics 14, 13, Fig. 1, which are connected by sleeves to the drums d, e, respectively. The application to propelling vehicles is mentioned.
