Ball and roller bearings.-A combined ball and roller bearing comprises a number of alternating balls d, Fig. 1, and rollers e, running on tracks in two rings a, b of L-section, and spaced by a cage f. The rollers take the journal load and the balls the end thrust, or the parts may be so designed that these functions are reversed. In a modification, the balls occupy central apertures in the rollers, projecting from the sides, and the cage is dispensed with. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the rollers e have convex surfaces and engage conical tracks g, h, which allow of adjustment for wear. Fig. 7 shows a cage consisting of a single ring f formed with holes to receive the balls d, and with slots on its inner edge engaging reduced central portions of the rollers e. The balls may be replaced by rollers with convex surfaces.
