Abstract

28,173. Newton, P. A., [Farbenfabriken vorm. F. Bayer & Co.]. Dec. 14. Sulphonic acids, obtaining; electrodes.-Polysulphonic acids of naphthalene and its derivatives are converted into compounds containing fewer sulphonic groups by treatment at a cathode of mercury, zinc, amalgamated lead, or other material producing snpertension. Caustic soda is added to the solution. In this way 1- naphthylamine-3-sulphonic acid and 1-naphthylamine-2:4-disulphonic acid may be obtained from the corresponding 3:8-disulphonic and 2:4:6-trisulphonic acids. The anode may be an iron plate immersed in caustic-soda solution, a diaphragm being used. The current density may be 3 amperes per square decimetre. When, by estimation of the quantity of sulphite formed, the action is found to be complete, the resultant solution is acidulated and the sulphur dioxide is boiled off.
