Sulphuretted dyes are obtained by heating a 4-oxydiarylamine or a substitution derivative thereof (not containing nitrogen or a free hydroxyl group in the 4'-position and not containing a sulphonic group, and with the exception of the condensation product from 1 :4-dichlor-2: 6-dinitrobenzene and p-aminophenol) with sulphur in presence of a condensing-agent such as aluminium chloride, iodine, or a hydrohalogen acid or agents producing such acid, or by heating these bodies (except 4-oxydiphenylamine) with sulphur alone, or by heating these bodies with an alkali polysulphide. Solvents or diluents or catalysts may be employed, and the process may be performed under pressure. According to examples, p-oxydiphenylamine is heated with sulphur and aluminium chloride, or with sodium polysulphide; p-oxy-p<1>-methoxydiphenylamine is heated with sodium polysulphide; p-oxyphenyl-m-naphthylamine is heated with sulphur and aluminium chloride, with sulphur alone, or with sodium polysulphide. Products dyeing cotton in an alkali sulphide bath brown-red, red-brown, violet-brown, violet, violet-black, blue-black, blue-grey, violet-grey, and blue tints are thus produced. p-Oxy-p'- methyl-, p-oxy-p<1>-ethoxy, and p-oxy-p<1>-chlordiphenylamine, and p-oxyphenyl- #-naphthylamine, are also specified as parent materials.
