Envelopes; wrappers.-Envelopes, wrappers, money bags, &c. in the finished state are provided with a transparent portion on the outer surface, either by the application of a coating of varnish and then a layer of paste composed of China clay, wood oil, and a drying-agent, in order to render the surface matt, or bv the application of a varnish to which a matting- substance such as wax or spermaceti .has been added. The operation of varnishing can be effected in a machine also adapted to apply the gum to the closing-flap, to print a border around the transparent portion, and to stamp the firm name on the cover of the envelope &c.
