Overwinding, preventing. - Apparatus for preventing overwinding and overspeed in winding and like engines comprises a pair of disks carrying tappets, one disk acting to cut off steam and to apply the brake gradually at the caution ' points, the other releasing a trip gear to stop the engine suddenly if the cage passes a predetermined point or approaches the end of the wind without a reduction of speed. A worm - wheel arranged between the disks A, B is geared to the engine shaft so as to make less than one revolution per wind. The disk A carries pins E which are adapted, on overwinding taking place, to knock over a vertical pin F, thereby releasing a weighted lever G coupled to the throttle valve and brake. The sleeve of the governor is linked to a block K, sliding on the pin F and arranged so that if the speed is high the block lies in the path of the pins E, thereby causing an earlier release of the weighted lever G. The second disk B carries projections L, which, when the cage is at the correct point for cutting off steam, engage one or other of two arms M suspended from levers N. These are each connected by a lever S and link U to an arm on the shaft X, which is coupled by arms Y, Z to the steamcontrol lever and to the braking devices respectively. When the throttle is closed, the suspended arms M are moved out of the path of the projections L by cams a operated by an arm e on the control shaft X. The governor is driven through a friction clutch which is held in engagement by steam pressure in a cylinder I<1> and is released by a weight I<5> when the engine stop valve is closed. The governor varies the cut off by a linkage f.
