[Cognate Application, 28,770/11.] Moulds; clamping moulds; moulding processes; casting processes. - Moulds for casting chilled connecting-pieces on to tubes, bars, &c. in making metal bedsteads &c., are themselves chilled castings cast in metal master moulds, these last being cast in sand moulds and then finished. A half-pattern 57, Fig. 23, of the flower or other design required, with a gate print part and print parts 69 for the tubes, at the desired angle or adjustable, is pinned to a plate 58 and one mould-box 61, Fig. 21, rammed. The assembled half patterns are placed upon this box inverted and the second box 62 rammed. The boxes are then assembled on either side of a plate 63, Fig. 25, having a square hole 66 therein and the master chill 35 cast as shown in Figs. 27 and 28. This is mounted in single or double hinged boxes, Figs. 6 and 14, and clamped by a screw 46, Fig. 5. With the single box, the chill 35 is reversed in its box 39 when a sufficient number of half-moulds have been cast, but with the double box 48, the whole box is reversed as soon as the upper casting has set and the second half cast. These half-moulds 1, 2, Fig. 3, are then clamped by bolts 21, 23 in boxes 12, 13 hinged together and bolted to a frame as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The free halves of the boxes are all bolted to bars 28 or 29 so as to open together, and clamps 32, 33 serve to close them securely for casting the flower chills on to the tubes 5, 6, 7 forming the bed rail.
