Abstract

20,534. Canfield, H. R. Sept. 21, 1910, [Convention date]. Controllers, actuating-mechanism for; systems for continuous-current motors only.-A relay for use in a motor controller &c. has one winding and one movable member so arranged that the latter is held in one position if the current exceeds a predetermined value, and is moved to another position when the current becomes smaller. A rectangular framework S' of magnetic material is provided with one pole-piece S<3> and an adjustable ping S''', the inner end S<4> of which forms a second pole-piece. An armature S<5> with an extension S<20>, preferably of smaller cross-section than the part S<5>, is connected to the switch arm S<8> by a non-magnetic rod S. The armature extension S<20> is separated from the plug S<19> by non-magnetic material S<6>, and the winding S" surrounds the polepiece S<4>, as shown in Fig. 1. When the current in the winding S<11> is below a certain value, the flux in the gap S<12> raises the armature S<5> against the flux in the gap S<13>, and the armature closes the switch. When a larger current flows, the flux in the gap S<13> has a greater effect on the armature, and the switch is held open. Three of the switches are shown in Fig. 4 combined to form an automatic motorstarter. When the main switch S is closed and the current drops sufficiently, the switch S<a> closes to short-circuit the resistance R', and to complete the circuit of the winding of the switch S<b>. The switches thus close in order until all the resistance is short-circuited. The windings may be shunted so that they only take a part of the current. In a modification, the switches connect resistances in parallel and finally shortcircuit them.
