Pile fabrics.-In weaving velvets, velveteens, &c. in double cloth, a pile warp 9, Figs. 1 and 2, is used to produce ribs or squares of pile on the top and bottom cloths and, in addition, a loop warp 10, Fig. 2, or two loop warps 8, Fig. 1, are used to produce loops of varying lengths which give different designs on some or all of the exposed portions of the foundation cloths. When one loop warp 10 is used, it produces loops first on the top cloth and then on the bottom cloth, and, after the ordinary pile has been cut, tufts of the loop warp are produced at 11. Where two loop warps are used, they may form long loops which give a braid effect on each cloth as shown in Fig. 1, or they may interchange from one cloth to the other, so that tufts of loop warp may be obtained. The loop warp is restricted to the longitudinal widths between the ribs or squares of ordinary pile.
