Abstract

19,419. Reed, A. Aug. 31. Couplings, automatic, of the type in which a hook-shaped coupling-bar engages a detent. Each coupling- head 7 carries a guide member 9 and an engaging-member 8, between which it is cut away to form an inclined face 7<Î>. The inner face 8<y> of each member 8 is bevelled to fit the corresponding face on the opposing head, and the upper face 8<Î> of each member 8 is inclined to fit the inclined face 7<Î> on the opposing head. Each member 9 is formed with a depending bracket 10, to which is pivoted a weighted lever 12 having a stop 13 which normally rests against the bracket, The upper end of each lever 12 is formed with a segmental surface 12<Î>, and the underside of each member 8 is similarly curved. When two vehicles come together, each engaging-member 8 rocks the lever 12 on the opposing coupling- head on its pivot until the lever is free to rock back with its surface 12<Î> engaging the correspondingly curved undersurface of the member 8. Uncoupling may be effected by pulling on cords 14, 15, Fig. 4, attached to the levers 12, and the latter may be retained in the uncoupled position by the engagement of hooks 17 with catches 16 pivoted on the brackets 10. Combined buffer and draw gear.-The drawbar 5 is arranged to slide against a buffing- spring 6.in. a sleeve 4 mounted to swivel in a fixed bearing 3.
