Abstract
18,789. Bills, A. J. Aug. 21. Boat raising and lowering gear.-Relates to raising and lowering gear for ships' boats of the kind in which the davits and chocks run on thwartship guides, means being provided to control their outward and inward movements. The wheels E<1>, E<2> of the chocks D<1>, D<2> run on rails c. The rear portion of the chock is provided with projections F<1> which work in transverse guide-grooves f in a casting F to prevent the chocks from rising off the rails. These grooves only permit the chocks to be run out far enough to allow the outer hinged portion to drop clear of the boat. Racks G', G<2> and pawls g<1>, g<2> carried by the chocks prevent the chocks from taking charge in either direction. The davits are braced together by an horizontal bar J carrying hooked lashings, and the sockets H passing through openings in box girders P are mounted on carriages M having wheels N running on rails n. The motion of the carriages is controlled by racks S and movable pawls s. The bar J carries a hooked thrust-bar T, which engages the gunwale of the boat and maintains the davits and chocks in proper relative position until the chocks are arrested in their outer travel. The davits are then free to overrun the chocks and carry the boat clear of the side of the ship.
