Abstract

To convey current to and from longitudinally-moving filaments, the filament 4, Fig. 1, is arranged to move horizontally upon the upper concave surface of a wall of mercury 3 held by capillary action between two upwardly-projecting metal prongs 2 which are amalgamated. The wall of mercury may communicate with an auxiliary receptacle containing mercury, to maintain it at a constant level, and the device may be kept cool by water pipes 6 surrounding it. The concave form of the surface of the mercury wall ensures that the moving conductor is maintained midway between the prongs.
