Abstract

17,411. Matignon, A. Aug. 13, 1910, [Convention date]. Ammonia.-Zinc, tungsten, or palladium, or their alloys, are used as catalysts in the synthetic production of ammonia. Suitable alloys are those with iron and its related metals, nickel, cobalt, manganese, &c., but the .use of uranium and its alloys is excepted. Zinc has the effect of causing the reaction to take place at a lower temperature, and it is advantageous to carry out the process under pressures below 100 atmospheres, conveniently at pressures between 25 and 50 atmospheres. The catalyst is used in a form presenting a large surface, for example zinc powder spread upon a support such as asbestos.
