16,891. Sizer, A. W. July 24. Extrusion machines; stream-cutting machines. -Apparatus for compressing cattle food &c. comprises a cylindrical casing A surrounded by a steam jacket B and fitted with a worm which has portions C, C<1> of different pitch and propels the material through tapered apertures k in a block K secured to the casing by a tapered ring J. A jacketted kettle L is arranged above the casing and is connected therewith by a shoot L<1> controlled by a slide L<2>, the material being fed to the casing by stirrers N. The spindle C<2> of the worm is backed hy a thrust pin X mounted in a bracket Y. A main shaft F drives the worm through gearing E, D, and the stirrer shaft M through chain gearing S and bevel-gearing R, O. The stirrer M may be driven by a vertical shaft mounted outside the kettle and provided with bevel-gears meshing with corresponding gears on the shafts F, P. The compressed material is severed by means of a knife W mounted on the worm spindle C<2>; or by a knife carried by a ring revolubly mounted on the ring J and driven from the shaft F; or a vertically-reciprocating knife may be employed.
