Driving - devices. - In a grinding - machine having a vertical rotating spindle a carried in a counterbalanced sliding head, end play of the spindle is prevented by attaching the chain b<1> suspending the counterbalanced head to a lever b, pivoted at c' on the head and supporting a collar a<2> loosely surrounding the spindle n. The collar a<2> presses upwards on a collar a<1> integral with the spindle and running on bearings between the collar a<2> and a plate d on the head, so that the counterbalance weights or springs are applied to act in an upward direction upon the spindle itself, and, by maintaining an upward pressure, prevent end play of the spindle in the head.
