Ammonium sulphate and sulphite. - Ammonium sulphate and sulphite are obtained by causing ammonia to react with sulphurous acid and oxygen or air in the presence of water. A stable sulphite of the formula (NH4)3 H(SO3)2, which has a neutral reaction, is stated to be produced. The solution is oxidized to sulphate by treatment with air, on the counter-current principle, while continuing to add ammonia to take up the sulphurous acid liberated by the oxidation of the above-mentioned sulphite. The oxidation may be effected in a series of towers, the liquid being kept warm, especially in the last tower. The sulphurous acid used may be dilute, such as that obtained in 'smelting sulphide ores.
