Smoke, consuming; air supply, heating. - In boilers comprising a firebox a and a tubular boiler b separated by a combustion chamber c, air is admitted at k, and is heated in the coiled pipe i before issuing through slots l to complete the combustion of the gases which pass from the fire - box by the pipe g. Air to be supplied under the grate h enters above the chamber c at n and passes down through the system of bent pipes m as shown by the arrows in Figs. 1 and 3. In a modification, two fireboxes are used in conjunction with one combustion chamber.
