[Cognate .4pplication, 13/12.] Expanding pulleys are formed each with a fixed flange a and a flange b movable by means of screws d, which pass transversely through bushes in the two parts a, b near the rim. The screws d have plain parts d<1> turning in, but incapable of end-long movement with respect to, the bushes in one flange such as a. The screws d are adapted to be turned to operate the pulley while the pulley is in. motion. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, each screw d carries a star-wheel e upon its end. A pair of stops f<1>, f<2> are adapted to be thrust out alternatively so as to engage the wheels e and to turn them in the one or the other direction respectively. Arrangements of toothed gearing are described connecting the screws d to one another and to a single star-wheel. Modified operating - means comprise oppositely - acting pawls which are actuated by an eccentric and are adapted to be brought into action alternatively. Double pulleys are described.
