Abstract
15,056. Knapp, F. A. June 27. Vessels for bulk cargoes.-Comprises improvements in ships with hulls of cylindrical form adapted to carry coal, grain, ore, or oil in bulk. Hatchways B are situated in the upper part of the vessel having side plates B<2>. Below the plates B<2> are situated shifting-boards D, extending throughout the length of the vessel and supported by frames C. Transverse frames E extend across the hull to support the sides. A sloping bottom G is fitted above the conveyer tunnel G<1>, the opening to which is guarded by a plate G<2>. Inclined boards F are also fitted. Cargo shot down the hatchways B falls on to the plate G<2> and gradually fills the vessel to the bottom of the shifting-boards D after which the space between them is filled, and additional cargo passes over the tops of the boards D and gradually fills the whole of the space beneath the boards F. Water-ballast tanks H are provided as shown.
