Abstract

14,234. Albrecht, C. V. Dec. 15. Thermo-electric batteries.-An annular thermopile shown in plan and elevation in Figs. 2 and 3, has its inner junctions heated by the exhaust gases from an internal-combustion or other engine and its outer junctions cooled by a water-jacket. The thermopile may consist of blocks A of nickel-steel grouped round a refractory pipe I, the inner surface of each being connected to the outer surface of the next by a phosphor-bronze strip B, insulated from the blocks by mica or the like. The cold junctions are also insulated from one another by mica strips J. Several tiers of elements may be built up, which are insulated from the casing L and from one another by disks O, F. The rings are bound together by insulated wire G or otherwise and varnished. In a modification, the refractory pipe I is replaced by a steel tube separated from the elements by an air space, and containing another steel tube filled with balls of refractory material to absorb the heat of the exhaust gases. The generator may be used on a motorcar for ignition or for lighting, the water-jacket being placed in the water-cooling system of the engine. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 5196/95, 14,639/96, 23,095/04, and 15,412/06.
