Abstract
13,412. Chard, N. D. Dec. 5, 1910. Turning.-The saddle of an engine lathe may be traversed by the lead screw and half-nuts or by a rack-and-pinion driven by toothed gear- 'ing and clutch mechanism splined to the lead screw. The clutch mechanism is controlled, to provide an automatic stop and a hand reverse, by a multiple stop-bar, and is interlocked with the nut controller to prevent simultaneous engagement of both sets of traversing mechanism. The bevel-wheels 109, 110 driving the pinion train are loose on the feed screw and have clutch faces to engage a splined clutch - part 115 traversable by a yoke rotatably but not slidably mounted on a bar 119 carrying a bell-crank 128, one arm of which engages a quadrant 130 and the other carries a member 129 adapted to engage with any one of a series of stops 127 as controlled by the position of the arm 128. The bar 119 is normally held to maintain the clutch in engagement for a forward traverse by a spring 123 confined between a collar 124 fixed to the bar and a grooved collar 122 splined to the bar and anchored by a pin projecting from the saddle on to the groove, which has an oblique portion corresponding to the positions 131<b>, 131<c> to cause disengagement and reverse respectively. The stops have a dovetail connexion with and are adjustable upon a bar 125, and are shaped as shown in Fig. 2, so that any required fineness of adjustment may be obtained. A projection 136 carried by the half-nuts is adapted to engage a notch 135 in the bar 119 to provide the interlock.
