Fuel supports.-To secure regular working in gas - generators using pulverulent coal, the column of fuel is divided into two or more substantially separate layers, the products of combustion of the lowest layer being transformed into generator gas on passing through the upper incandescent layer or layers. A generator working on this principle is shown, and comprises a lower rotating grate c and an upper stationary grate d, which may be watercooled. The air for combustion passes through the openings h in the grate c, and the products of combustion of the lower layer pass through openings k in the upper grate d to the fuel upon it. Air or steam may be injected through the tube n below the upper grate to regulate the temperature of the fuel upon it.
