Vapours, utilizing for effecting further evaporation; film evaporators.-An evaporator comprising a heating-surface, such as a serpentine pipe i, over which liquid is repeatedly circulated in a film by a pump m, leading to a distributing-pipe o, is heated by means of the vapours generated in the evaporator after they have been compressed by a blower g. A small quantity of steam is admitted by a pipe q to make up for losses by radiation and to prevent the accumulation of air in the chamber. The feed-liquor is preheated and at the same time freed from dissolved air by means of the heat of the condensed liquid from the pipe i ; a blow-off is fitted to the pipe i to allow any gases to escape. The blower q effects a compression of about onetenth of an atmosphere. The Provisional Specification describes an apparatus in which the heating-surface consists of a spiral tube the lower end of which passes through a side-chamber in which the feed-liquor is preheated in the form of spray, a funnel beiog provided in the base of the evaporator to collect the concentrated liquor and separate it from the incoming feed-liquors, and it is stated that a supplementary supply of heat may be obtained by means of heating-jackets, coils, furnaces, &c.
