Skips; jib cranes.- In excavating-machinery of the type in which a scoop is dragged along the ground by a filling- rope, hoisted from the jib of a derrick, slued, and dumped, two hoisting-ropes are used, carried over guide-pulleys arranged on either side of the pivot of the jib so that the jib is slued by the tension of the hoisting-rope. As shown, a scoop 3 is filled by a rope 4 wound on a drum 5, hoisted and slued to the right by a rope 7<a> passing over guidepulleys set to the right of the pivot of the jib and wound on a drum 8<a>. The scoop is then tipped, the jib swung to the left, and the scoop lowered by a rope 7<b> passing over pulleys set to the left of the pivot of the jib and round a drum 8<b>. The three winding-drums are preferably on the same shaft, and each is provided with a brake and clutch. If the scoop is to be dumped sometimes to one side of the cutting and sometimes to the other, the two ropes 7<a>, 7<b> are used for hoisting and slueing only, and a separate tipping-rope as described in Specification 19,340/09 is used, or the end of the jib is furnished with trip gear engaging a rigid bail on the scoop and tipping the same. The jib is provided with a band brake to control the slueing, and with a splayed socket, wedges, and holding-bolts to enable its angle to be adjusted.
