Abstract

11,008. Imhoff, M. May 6, 1910, [Convention date]. Radial - flow (unbladed) type; oppositelyrunning rotor type; working-fluid supply.- Pistons moving under centrifugal force in the rotary radial cylinders of a gas turbine effect the suction and compression of the charge and the periodic admission of the exploded gases to the reaction nozzles. Radial cylinders z, secured to a shaft w, are fitted with pistons k. As each piston k is thrown outwards by centrifugal force it draws air behind it through ports o controlled by a spring-pressed valve m, and compresses air in the cylinder space before it. When the piston strikes the valve-stem t, fuel is injected through the valve p into the compressed air, and the mixture is ignited. The explosion drives the piston inwards, causing it to strike a spring f on the stem of a valve v, which thereupon opens and admits the combustion products to a reaction nozzle d. Channels< >u in the cylinder walls permit compressed air to escape from the inner to the outer side of the inwardly-moving piston. In a modification a mixture of gas and air may be drawn through ports l and the valves m. The nozzles may co-operate with an oppositely-running vane-wheel suitably geared to the shaft w.
