Abstract

Metal pipes and tubes.-In a method of expanding a duct a into intimate contact with external gills or plates b by passing through the duct mechanical means such as is shown at i, Fig. 7, gradually increasing the diameter uniformly from end to end at a single operation, the force is transmitted through flanged contacting portions of the gills or plates in order to assist in resisting longitudinal movement of the duct. To this end also the tubes may be flanged as at a<1>. In the example shown in Fig. 7 the actuation is hydraulic. A roller expander may be used. The tubes a as placed in position may be slit longitudinally and have a slight overlap (Fig. 4), the edges abutting after the expanding operation. The tubes may be united to the gills or plates by introducing a fusible mixture in powdered condition between the gills in excess of requirements, vibrating the assembled parts so as to work the material into the joints, and applying heat. The flanged holes in the gills may be produced by a stamp h as in Fig. 3 so as to shape the metal b in part before the hole is punched and thereafter to complete the shape. In a surface apparatus for exchange of heat similarly constructed the vertical tubes a are provided with additional gills b<1> between those b which are flanged at e to form the outer casing. Steam enters at r and water of condensation is removed at u, holes t being provided to permit water to pass from place to place.
