Abstract

8519. Collinson, F. E., and Short & Mason. April 5. Barometers.-Relates to aneroid barometers of the kind in which the indicating-mechanism and the scale are relatively adjustable. The mechanism is mounted on a plate A within the casing, and this plate is connected by screws A<3> to the plate A', which is provided with a flange A<2> passing through a hole in the back of the casing B. Balls or the like A<4> may be provided between the plate A and the casing. The scale C is preferably marked to show merely whether the barometer reading is rising or falling, the pointer being brought to the normal position when required by rotating the handle A<5>. The plate A' may be graduated, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the reading of the barometer may be corrected for altitude by turning the mechanism until the appropriate figure comes opposite the mark G on the casing; or the barometer may be used to estimate the altitude at which it is used by turning the plate A' until the known sealevel reading is indicated; in these cases an ordinary scale is employed.
