8398. Vavasour, Sir W. E. J. April 4. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement of; propelling; steering.-The main supporting-planes of a flying-machine are situated at the rear of adjustable frames, each carrying one or more tractor screws, and are independently adjustable relatively to the body of the machine so that the air current from the propellers may be directed above or below the planes. The frames 3, 4, Fig. 1, carrying the propellers 4<x>, 5, 6 are fixed at their inner ends to a ring 7 adapted to be rotated in bearings 8 to vary the direction of the propeller shafts. The ring 7 is toothed internally and gears with a pinion operated by a cranked bar 11, so that the propellers at the two sides of the machine are adjusted simultaneously. A plane 22 may be fixed to the frames 3, 4 so as to be adjusted therewith, or it may be hinged so as to be separately movable. The main planes extending from each side of the body 1 at the rear of the propellers comprise a fixed central part 23, to which independently adjustable parts 25, 27 are hinged. The body 1 of the machine is fitted with a hinged portion 35, which acts as a rudder for lateral steering. The propellers are fitted with helical toothed wheels 12 engaged by worms 14, 15, 16 on a transverse shaft 13. The worms decrease in length from the outer one 16 to the inner one 14 so that, by moving the shaft 13 longitudinally, the propellers 4<x>, 5, 6 can be thrown out of gear successively. The shaft 13 has a squared inner end engaging with a similar socket 18 on the motor shaft, which allows of its endlong motion.
